How the strategy has evolved
Four generations of strategy
The timeline follows the evolution of FANRPAN’s strategic plans as set out in the Strategic Plan 2025 to 2035. In 2010 the network’s mandate was extended from Eastern and Southern Africa to the whole continent.
Formation
- Response to a call by university departments and research institutions from eight SADC countries for an autonomous policy research and analysis network
- Formal registration as an international not-for-profit organisation
1st generation
- Building institutional capacity for coordinated policy dialogue among all stakeholders
- Improving policy research, analysis and formulation on key SADC priorities
2nd generation
- Linking government, the private sector and civil society
- Building capacity for policy analysis in southern Africa
- Supporting demand-driven policy research and analysis
3rd generation
- Building resilient food systems across Africa through evidence-based food, agriculture and natural resources policies developed in partnership with non-state actors
4th generation
- Promoting an enabling policy environment for the transformation of agriculture and food systems in Africa

Strategic Plan 2025 to 2035
The plan positions FANRPAN as a continental hub for evidence-based policy reform, aligned with the Kampala CAADP Declaration and Agenda 2063. Its vision is resilient African agriculture and food systems, in harmony with nature, delivering prosperity and health for all.
