About the project

Putting women farmers’ priorities on the policy agenda

The WARM project set out to strengthen women farmers’ ability to advocate for appropriate agricultural policies and programmes, so that local and national policies and services would address their needs, including access to credit, better seed and other inputs.

Most rural farmers in Africa are women, yet they are often excluded from decision-making and local governance, and have limited control over land, inputs, credit and technology. As a result, their needs are often not reflected in agricultural policy.

FANRPAN piloted the project in Malawi and Mozambique, drawing on its experience as a regional multi-stakeholder policy research network to connect women farmers, researchers and policy processes. It worked with farmer organisations, national research institutions and universities, community groups and policymakers.

The project was supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of its Agricultural Development initiative.
