About FANRPAN Multi-stakeholder Policy Dialogues

FANRPAN has been conducting policy dialogues at national and regional levels, since its inception in 1997, as part of its broader mandate as a regional platform that brings together governments, policy analysts, farmers, the private sector and civil society to work together in policy development while being sufficiently independent to be able to provide objective evidence-based policy research, analysis and advice.

FANRPAN is keenly aware that research that is divorced from policy debate and development is often largely ignored. Policy dialogues have, therefore, been used as an opportunity to enhance the voices of the less visible stakeholders, especially farmers’ organizations and civil society, by building their capacity to develop evidence-based options and equipping them with skills for effective engagement to articulate their interests and those of their members in important agricultural and food policy debates.

The FANRPAN policy dialogues are unique in that they bring together multiple stakeholders from multiple countries to discuss multiple issues from the multiple sectors of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources. They are, thus, often referred to as the FANRPAN Multi-stakeholder Policy Dialogues and seek to engage all of FANRPAN’s stakeholder groups in four main processes: (1) Issue identification and setting; (2) Information and Knowledge exchange; (3) Developing policy advice on the issue, and (4) Pursuing the issue.
