FANRPAN joins CTA in planning for greater youth involvement in agriculture and rural development
19 November 2012

FANRPAN's Youth in Agriculture Project Manager, Ms Sithembile Mwamakamba joined twenty five young agriculture champions and experts from the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) region in Wageningen the home of the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) from 14 - 16 November 2012 for a Strategic Youth Stakeholder Workshop.

The objective of the Strategic Youth Stakeholder Workshop was to review major issues and initiatives related to youth in agriculture and rural development in ACP countries, in order to provide guidelines for the finalisation and implementation of the CTA Youth Strategy.

The workshop provided an opportunity for CTA to consult key organisations from the EU, ACP and international arenas working to support youth in ARD activities, as well as youth champions involved in these areas.

Some of the organisations represented during the workshop included Yam-Pukri, CARICOM, Caribbean Regional Agricultural Policy Network (CARPAN), Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, Savannah Young Farmers Network, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Ndola Youth Resource Center, FAO, IFAD, Young Professionals' Platform for Agricultural Research for Development (YPARD), Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), SangoNet, and Caribbean Farmers Network (CaFAN).

Ms Mwamakamba shared outputs of the 2011 and 2012 FANRPAN Regional High Level Food Security Policy Dialogues focused on youth engagement in the agriculture value chain. She also presented results of the six country case studies on youth engagement in agriculture in Malawi, Mauritius, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The young participants at the workshop also took advantage of social media platforms to consult with colleagues who did not make it to Wageningen. News from the workshop was tweeted live and responses were used to enrich the discussions.
