Harmonised Seed Security Project (HASSP) National Workshop
30 June 2010 - 2 July 2010

The Harmonised Seed Security National Workshop was conducted at Rainbow Towers Hotel in Harare from 30 June to 2 July. The workshop which was officially opened by the Permanent Secretary of Agriculture, Mr Ngoni Masoka, was attended by 51 participants representing farmers, government, private sector, NGOs, development partners, parastatals, researchers and HASSP Seed Elders. The ultimate aim of the workshop was for the diverse range of seed stakeholders in Zimbabwe to jointly reflect and plan on how they could contribute to improved seed development, quality, availability and affordability and its movement within and between SADC countries given the primacy of seed security in achieving food security. The workshop was convened by FANRPAN regional office and its node in Zimbabwe which is hosted by the Agricultural Research Council.

Specifically, the workshop’s objectives were:
  1. To build participants’ understanding of the SADC seed harmonization protocols;
  2. To collectively define a common vision for Zimbabwe’s stakeholders in the seed value chain of the four-year Harmonized Seed Security Project (HaSSP) - a pilot project which follows the SADC Seed Security Network (SSSN 1);
  3. To establish the baseline of where the project is starting from, including mapping of existing seed projects and initiatives to avoid overlap;
  4. To generate a multi-stakeholder four-year national work plan; and
  5. To develop a programme implementation strategy that covers governance, management, learning, monitoring, evaluation and communication.
