Seed Availability
  • According to the Zimbabwe Seed Traders Association (ZSTA) approximately 20,000 MT of maize seed will be available for the 2009/10 season.
  • National seed requirement is +/- 35,000 MT. This leaves a shortfall of 15,000 MT, which needs to be met through imports.
  • ZSTA emphasized that the figures are preliminary and subject to change.
Booklet on Conservation Agriculture in Zimbabwe
  • The CA Task Force has published a booklet on guidelines to Conservation Agriculture in Zimbabwe. The booklet is designed for extension workers and trainers of trainers. For copies of the booklet please contact Michael Jenrich at
CA training
  • River of life is offering training of trainers courses on conservation agriculture on a monthly basis for NGOs and AGRITEX field extension staff (see Training Calendar on the last page).

AGRA Mission on Food Security
  • A team led by AGRA (Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa), including FAO, IFAD, WFP visited the country from the 6th to the 10th of April and met government officials. The mission decided to adopt and promote a programme proposal developed by the EU led donor group to support 600,000 communal households to address household and national food security challenges.
  • Through the proposed programme, communal households will be supported with appropriate input (seed & fertilizer) and extension packages for the cultivation of maize and sorghum and in some cases pulses to produce on average 1 ha of cereals. The aide-memoire for the proposal has been endorsed & signed by the Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development. 2009 Crop & Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM)
  • A joint mission from FAO and WFP is in the country upon the request of the Government to conduct the Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission for 2009. The CFSAM is a verification exercise of the agriculture and food security situation in the country. The mission is taking place from the 27th of April to the 15th of May 2009.
Emergency Response Fund (ERF)
  • OCHA announced that multiple funding windows will be open through the year for humanitarian organisations to access funds through the Emergency Response Fund for agricultural projects. For more information please contact Mustafa Muhumed Omer at .
Revision Exercise CAP 2009
  • The CAP revision exercise is currently underway. Compilation of new and revised projects for the agriculture sector has been completed. OCHA is currently consolidating inputs from all sectors.
Seed Security Systems Assessment
  • Catholic Relief Services is planning to carry out a Seed System Security Assessment (SSSA) from the 2nd to 18th of June 2009.
  • The objectives of the SSSA are to assess the current seed security systems in the different contexts or zones in Zimbabwe and to identify opportunities within the sector for Seed Systems revival.
  • The SSSA will be coordinated by CRS and will include strategic partners such as NGOs, the Government, CGIAR, FAO and Universities.
