FANRPAN to Participate at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Climate Change Meeting
Gaborone, Botswana
12 May 2009 - 15 May 2009

FANRPAN has been invited to participate at the SADC technical climate change meeting which will discuss "Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) and the Implementation Strategy for the Protocol on Forestry" and other related proposed climate change mechanisms. The meeting is scheduled to take place from the 12th-14th of May 2009 in Gaborone, Botswana.

The "Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD)", is becoming a topical subject in the on-going climate change debates. REDD offers great potential to Africa but has its own limitations. SADC has therefore seen it critical for experts from across Africa to engage effectively and come up with a position that will make the continent benefit from the post 2012 climate change regime. The position is also required for the 15th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) scheduled for Copenhagen, Denmark, December 7 - 18, 2009.

Expected to attend this meeting are delegates from regional economic communities, COMESA, EAC, ECOWAS, and COMIFAC, as well as international organisations working on Climate Change. This meeting will present a great learning opportunity for FANRPAN and will help create linkages to other organisations doing related work in the region. FANRPAN will be represented by Ms. Thembi Ndema, who is responsible for its climate change project, ACCID.
