FANRPAN endorses Farming First
20 April 2009

As part of its mission, FANRPAN promotes effective Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources (FANR) policies by facilitating linkages and partnerships between government and civil society; building the capacity for policy analysis and policy dialogues in southern Africa, and supporting demand - driven policy research and analysis. In line with its mandate as a policy network, FANRPAN recently endorsed Farming First, a partnership which brings together researchers, the private sector, and farmers, emphasises putting the smallholder farmers first in any solution towards attaining sustainable development through agriculture.

Farming First principles are hinged on six interlinked imperatives for sustainable development, namely; safeguarding natural resources, sharing knowledge, building local access, protecting harvests, enabling access to markets, and prioritising research imperatives. The common need for food, feed, fibre and fuel requires a global approach to increase agricultural output in an environmentally sustainable, economically feasible, and socially responsible manner.

Similar to FANRPAN, Farming First promotes knowledge networks and a multi-stakeholder approach that includes Governments, businesses, scientists, and civil society and focuses their attention on the source of our food security.
