FANRPAN Participates at the High Level Meeting on Food Security for All (RANSA) in Madrid, Spain

FANRPAN CEO, Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda was invited by The Spanish Government to participate at the High Level Meeting on Food Security for All (RANSA) held in Madrid Spain from 26-27 January 2009.

Dr Sibanda made a "Call for a new regimen of linking research outputs to policy processes: African think tanks to generate credible locally-owned evidence which is disseminated through multi-stakeholder dialogue platforms for policy advocacy" during the Round Table 3 discussion on "Linking Research to Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Policies".

Speakers at the 2 days event included Ministers of Agriculture, Directors of FAO, WFP, IFAD, UNICEF and IFPRI; the Managing Director of the World Bank, AGRA Chairman, Director of Agricultural development at Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation, NEPAD-CAADP Agricultural Advisor. The closing statements was made by the United Nations Secretary General Mr Ban Ki-Moon and the President of the Government of Spain Mr Jose Luis Rodriguez-Zapatero.

The main objectives of the RANSA Meeting were:
  1. To analyse the progress made since the last Rome Summit (3-5 June 2008)
  2. To agree on the next priorities for immediate action, as well as for establishing medium and long term measures and results
  3. A commitment to achieve these objectives to accomplish the Millennium Development Goals aimed at reducing hunger and poverty
The event provided continuity to the United Nations Global Action Plan led by the United Nations Secretary-General and offered an opportunity to design a road map that will guarantee the fulfilment of the objectives and commitments acquired during the last Rome Summit.
