Introduction
In 2005, FANRPAN in conjunction with SACAU conducted a regional study to establish a database of farmer organisations in Southern Africa. The study also identified various challenges constraining the smooth operation of farmer organisations and concluded that;

The farmers community is too fragmented, with inadequate linkages at regional level

The available skills and knowledge are not shared across the region

The level of commercialization and engagement in agricultural trade is still very low.
